Notes for Judging: | It's no secret that in the last few years, many states in the U.S. have passed legislation banning specific books, and critical parts of American history—erasing the stories and contributions of marginalized people in our country. Just recently, Florida banned the use of state and federal funds on DEI programs at state universities. And we know it won’t stop there. We aimed to spark a movement to spotlight the risks of these bans and censorship. We partnered with our friends at Courageous Conversation Global Foundation to create AMERICA ERASED, aimed at showing the dangerous repercussions of erasing stories that represent American values and defending students’ freedom to learn. It comes to life in three parts: a powerful film, a website, and social posters, What happens when Martin Luther King, Jr. never made his famous I Have a Dream speech? What happens when Ruby Bridges never entered William Frantz Elementary School? With the intent to defend students’ freedom to learn, the film, "America Erased," shows what values students lose when these stories are erased from school curriculums. |
