We pass people with disabilities every day. Too often we see the wheelchair, the cane, the prosthetic, and assume we already know the story. The Avalon Foundation campaign “Niepełnosprawność nie mówi jacy jesteśmy” (“Disability doesn’t define who we are”) starts from that reflex. The film centres on a shop window. Passersby stop and look inside at people with disabilities going about ordinary moments of life. Among them is Monika Brodka, one of Poland’s most distinctive contemporary artists, who joined the project because she understands what it means to be reduced to a single defining trait. Her song “Krzyżówka Dnia” (“Daily Crossword”), written about feeling unseen and unheard, becomes the soundtrack. The film asks the viewer to stop, look, and see a person. |
