Notes for Judging: Italians rank first in Europe for food waste, with 555.8 grams wasted per person every week, much of it coming from hotels and restaurants, where around 4 million tonnes are wasted every year. Although ACLI Roma, one of Italy’s largest social organizations, was already recovering surplus food independently from local food markets, no official body had ever been appointed to recover surplus from the hospitality sector.
With The Art Of Saving Food project, we brought this gap to the attention of some of Italy’s most influential political figures, including the Mayor of Rome, leading to a historic result: ACLI was officially tasked with recovering surplus food from Rome’s hotels and redistributing it for social purposes, increasing food saved by 15% compared to the previous year.
